Pottery and statuary found at gravesites.
Over time, there have been different art objects that have been created which explain the history of different parts of the world. Art from different laces tells different stories about the places, and they can be said to be unique in their own ways. Greek art is one of the oldest forms of art that exist, and they have been around for a long time. As part of the pioneers of art, there are many unique objects of art that were created by different artists of the country which still exist today.
Most of the objects are stored in different museums in the world, but then they still hold the rich history of art of the country. On this exhibit that I am creating, it will be focused on objects that tell a specific story about the ancient Aegean culture, which has existed for years. there were different themes that were carried by Greece art, and most of the were used to communicate different messages. There was external influence of other artists from different parts of the world on Greek art. The topic that I have chosen for this exhibit is the Secrets of the Dead Warriors, Maidens, and Lovers: Pottery and statuary found at gravesites.
1st Object: The Shaft Graves at Mycenae
The part of the funeral stele that was found on the Grave Circle A in Mycenae on the 16th Century BC. The funeral in shaft in which this art was found in Grave 5 that displays wealth and size. This is the grave that contained most of the precious materials which included gold and silver jewelry. More jewelry was on the make graves compared to the amount that was on the male jewelry. The upright slab stone is meant to show where the gravesite is, and it is carved to show patterns and scenes. In this specific art, a chariot is scene on the carvings on the lower part of the art, and then a swordsman is in front of the art.
The stele structures were sculptured, and they symbolize the art of the Mainland Greeks during the Bronze Age. The tombstones are decorated with great chariot scenes that might mean a lot of aspects. Chariots might signal a war, races that were part of the funeral games, and even hunting. This is because chariots were very common at this time. The main decorations that can be seen in this art are done in spirals and wavy lines. The funerary stele was made up of the poros stone, and the spirals that are on the top might indicate waves as a way of showing the location of the activity that is going on the lower part of the art.
2nd Object: a ceremonial vessel (rhyton) in the form of a bull’s head
Vessels remain to be an important part of history for the people of Greek. This was evident in various grave shafts. There are vessels that have been located in different gravesites. The ceremonial vessel that is also known as rhyton which takes the shape of a bull’s head has been located in the Grave Circle A, Shaft Grave IV, and Mycenae. The art is a luxury tool, and it shows the work that is doubted to be borrowed from the East and thus might have been done by an immigrant.
Because this is a luxury good from Shaft Grave IV, it indicates that the deceased who were buried in this kind of grave was adorned with great objects of great value. The carving is from black steatite, and it shows great precision in the way that it is made. The eyes of the head can be shown to be inlaid, and the snout is also outlined. There is a flower-shaped patch on the forehead of the vessel, and the two horns are elongated on this specific art. The art dates to the Neopalatial period. The horns are golden, and this is a sign of opulence. The imagery that has been employed on this specific piece is the one that reflects the Minoan Marine Style.
Object 3: Mycenaean death mask
There masks that were made up of gold were found in graves, especially on the Grave Circle A. This specific death mask that was discovered in 1876 at Mycenae is known to have been buried together with the males in the society. The layer of gold that has been used to make the masks appears like thin sheets. There is a sign of great metalwork in the way that they are made. The objects are quite fragile and were found laid on the face of the dead. Most of them have been named to be masks that were buried with great people such as kings of the area. Most of the face that has been indicated by the mask includes a person that had a triangular face, lips that are pursed, and even a narrow nose.
The mask has been named the Mask of Agamemnon, and it is dated to be around 1600-1500BCE. It was first identified by Heinrich Schliemann, who thought that the site was that of the Homeric king. There is mustache that is quite distinct, and the mask can be seen to be quite unique compared to other masks that have been located too. The masks were used to commemorate the death and honor them. There is a strong relationship that was established between the mask and the spirit world as they could help in frightening away spirits that were malevolent.
